The Truth About Losing Weight On A Vegetarian Diet

April 28th, 2008 by envoypfeilschifter

By Erik Leipoldt It does not matter what you eat. Just dont eat a lot, exercise, and your weight will not be a problem. True? Not quite! There is scientific evidence that a vegetarian diet keeps that weight down, whereas meat eaters put it on. What you eat does matter. You know that weight loss is an industry. A money-making industry with many claims to make: Claims of weight loss pills, herbs and juices. Claims of exercise machines and exercise programmes. Claims of high-fat, no fat or lean diets. Which work? Which do not? How to find those things that work? It is bewildering. And expensive! The US FDA has warned against the effectiveness of a number of products that are being marketed. They include fat or starch blockers, weight loss chewing gum and body wraps. Even weight loss earrings and spectacles are in this list. Perhaps the last one is effective when your friends wear them to look at you? By contrast, vegetarians and vegans know what they eat and why they eat it. They save money and lose weight. Weight loss of both your body and your wallet? Why not. Vegetarian food production is inherently cheaper than that of meat. Just like a high fibre vegetarian diet goes through your system faster, the vegetarian food production chain is short compared to that of growing meat. Growing animals for meat is after all energy-intensive, time-consuming and expensive. For instance, it takes five kilograms of grain to produce one kilogram of beef. It is that concentrated energy that you eat. And its not high-fibre. Short production cycles are better for the planet and shorter digestive processes are better for you. Perhaps you do not even need special low calorie vegetarian recipes to lose weight. A vegetarian or vegan diet appears to be a recipe for weight loss in itself! At least it represents an excellent start. Consider the latest research. Vegetarian and vegan diets work Recent British scientific research is based on a study of 22,000 people who were followed over five years. All participants put on weight over that time. However, meat eaters who changed to a vegetarian diet gained the least weight. Prof Tim Keys, who led this study for the University of Oxford and Cancer Research UK, obtained interesting results that are contrary to popular beliefs. His study is published in the Journal of Obesity. He said: Contrary to current popular views that a diet low in carbohydrates and high in protein keeps weight down, we found that the lowest weight gain came in people with high intake of carbohydrates and low intake of protein. The study involved meat eaters, fish eaters, vegetarians and vegans. On average the entire human sample population gained 2 kilos over the five years and none of them were overweight. The less consumption of animal products, the less weight was gained, leaving the vegans on top, with vegetarians runners-up. And the bit about exercising then? Well, its part of a holistic picture it seems. The study also found that those who became more physically active gained less weight than those who did not. No surprises there. So, not good news for vegan couch potatoes and a ray of hope for raging carnivores? Well, the simple message is, whatever you eat, physical activity is part of the weight loss, and health-deal. Good health Health too? Yes, this study is part of a larger investigation by EPIC (European Prospective Investigation into Cancer and Nutrition), comparing half a million peoples diets in 10 countries to learn how diet is linked to cancer. Results from EPICs investigation show that diet is a leading cause of some cancers. A balanced vegetarian or vegan diet is good for your health. Take diabetes, often a condition associated with inadequate diet and being over-weight. The EPIC study has revealed that diabetics carry three times the normal risk of developing colo-rectal cancer. And a recent Australian study even suggests that a diet that is rich in vegetables and fruit can reduce the effects of asthma attacks. The wider benefits of choosing a vegetarian or vegan diet for weight loss are obvious. But perhaps youd still rather take the easy way out and continue to eat meat. Meat perhaps that has been engineered for your health? Voila! Researchers at Harvard University have now engineered pigs to produce healthy forms of bacon, ham and pork crackling. Three little pigs were genetically modified to carry Omega 3-converting genes of a nematode worm. This gives the meat of these three little research pigs the benefits of fats and oils found in fish and vegetables! Talk about a long production process to get the same benefits from plants that take a fraction of the energy and time to produce. Im telling no porky: before long pigs will fly But do you want to eat them? Motivation Weight loss may be your focus but you can see that its achievement is connected to a holistic picture, including your health and that of the world we live in. That is why you could say that many vegetarians and vegans are socially responsible eaters. Perhaps that insight will give you the motivation to become a vegetarian or vegan: to lose weightand to discover a whole new world! Of course some people have medical conditions that cause them to be over weight. It would be foolish to recommend a vegetarian diet as a miracle cure in those instances. But in all other cases of being over weight there is one over-riding thing that you need: motivation. If you know why you want to lose weight you will do it. Motivation is everything. The evidence is in on effectiveness of vegetarian diets with respect to weight loss. If you also know that you are doing your body and the planet a favour by losing weight through vegetarian or vegan diets then what are you waiting for? Its over to you! Dr Erik Leipoldt PhD has been a lacto-ovo vegetarian for 30 years and his children were raised vegetarian. He uses a wheelchair due to spinal cord injury and attributes much of his good health and normal weight to his vegetarian diet. He writes about vegetarianism from his personal experience and knowledge found along the track, in his blog: http://low–calorie–and–vegetarian–recipe.blogspot.com/ Article Source: http://EzineArticles.com/?expert=Erik_Leipoldt http://EzineArticles.com/?The-Truth-About-Losing-Weight-On-A-Vegetarian-Diet&id=168746 best debt consolidation loan new westminster debt consolidation how to increase credit score does your credit score go down if you defer a payment or loan

A Tool For Selling New Ideas!

April 26th, 2008 by envoypfeilschifter

By Daniel Levis Imagine tossing a pebble into a crystal clear pond on a still day, & watching the ripples make their way to the shore. A tiny cause has a massive effect. But on a windswept stormy day, you could hurl the largest boulder into the same pool, and the effect would be felt for no more than a few feet. And so it is with your sales message. Your prospects are in a trance that is like a still pool of awareness. They are in an Im worried about money trance. They are in an I wish I could finally find that somebody special trance. They are in an Im sick of my dead end job trance, & so on. If you enter that trance with your words, your prospects will follow you, & accept your suggestions. They will give those suggestions power, like the pebble that makes its presence felt on the shore. Selling your product or service involves introducing new ideas, more often than not. How do you enter an existing trance, & turn it into a new one? Frequently, your research will tell you that there is an ideological hurdle that you must clear in order to make the sale. Belief Is All-Powerful! To enter the buyers trance, begin your sales message by demonstrating where your position agrees with their accepted beliefs. As you move forward, make a logical connection between that which is accepted, & another conclusion that is a step closer to the new conclusion you wish to promote. This act of mental agreement creates momentum. For example, if your target market believes that Guaranteed Investment Certificates are the best way to invest their money, they are unlikely to listen to you if you boldly proclaim the superiority of Mutual Funds. But would they give you some attention if you began with, Would you be interested in more of the kind of money growth youve enjoyed through Guaranteed Investment Certificates? And then, If there were a low risk strategy for using GICs, together with Mutual Funds to increase your returns by 53% or more, would you want to find out about it? And then, Give me just 15 minutes, & Ill show you the failsafe secret to an earlier retirement! By establishing empathy in your sales message, you enter the trance. Each successive point or question should do three things. 1) Echo accepted belief.2) Introduce a new element that when logically combined with the previous conclusion, creates a new hypothesis.3) Raise the level of commitment to the new idea. Begin pursuing a small yes response, & gradually grow that agreement into a big YES response. Use questions, statements, & logic that get your prospects responding in the affirmative! Why Does This Work? To be human, is to have unlimited freedom of choice. We are able to consciously decide our response to every stimulus. This is our god given gift. However, we forget this. Instead, we are a bundle of conditioned responses. We hypnotize ourselves into believing that external circumstances give rise to our thoughts. For instance, if I were to say to you that you are stupid, you would probably become angry, & think I was a jerk for saying so. That is a choice you make. You could just as easily make a choice to ignore my remark. You could make any choice you wish. You could even decide to think that I am a jealous fool, & feel sorry for me. The choice is all yours. On the other hand, if I were to say to you that you are brilliant, you would no doubt feel pleased with yourself. Again, this is a choice. You could just as easily decide to pay no attention to my opinion. But you forget you are making a choice, and you automatically become angry or flattered, depending on the stimulus. You are in a trance of your own making. To be human, is to be full of such conditioning. When we see a logical conclusion that incorporates our own accepted beliefs, we are conditioned to accept another one, & then another. Until without even realizing it, we have accepted a new belief that we would not have accepted, had it been forced on us in the first place. Such is the judo of persuasion. Plants For Sale

April 24th, 2008 by envoypfeilschifter

By Ross Bainbridge Many people pursue gardening as a hobby. Depending on where they live, people may have gardens or potted plants in their houses. Garden makeovers are also gaining immense popularity these days. There are a large number of nurseries that sell plants at affordable prices. These nurseries may even offer regular discounts to attract more buyers. They also offer discounts for bulk purchases of plants. It is advisable to shop around for better quality and affordable prices. However, it is important to have adequate knowledge about the plants- their bloom season, the type of plant, and required weather conditions to successfully grow a garden. Plants can also be selected on the basis of the amount of sunlight required. The key to successful shopping of plants is proper planning and sufficient research. It is advisable for gardeners to have a clear idea as to how they would like there garden to be and what type of plants they would like to grow in it. The quality of the plants is a driving factor while shopping for plants. Many people are lured by lucrative discounts offered by some nurseries and tend to compromise the quality of the plants. Such plants usually wither quickly, necessitating immediate replacement. Many gardeners purchase seeds of plants to develop a stronger root system. The quality of plants can be determined by the color of the leaves and the root system. Generally, significant gaps between the new leaves imply lack of care and nourishment. It is recommended to buy plants as soon as the growing season of the plant commences to ensure that the plant can withstand extreme weather. Most indoor plants are available in discount stores and nurseries throughout the year. Plants and shrubs can also be purchased from local growers to be assured of good quality. Many gardeners buy rare shrubs and perennials online through the websites of nurseries. It is easy and convenient to shop for plants on the Internet. Gardeners are required to fill out online order forms to specify the size and quantity of the desired plants. It is advisable to retain the copy of the guarantee or replacement policy offered by the online providers. Plants provides detailed information on Plants, House Plants, Tropical Plants, Garden Plants and more. Plants is affiliated with Flower Seed. Wilted Hangups

April 22nd, 2008 by envoypfeilschifter

By Tammy Clayton Well-dressed porches everywhere wear colorful hanging baskets and fantastic mixed containers for summer. Even if the occupants budget only allows one 10 pot hanging pot there will be brilliant color somewhere on that porch. The well-dressed porch is a must do thing whether your porch is a tiny point of entry or a Victorian wrap-around the code is that flowers are supposed to spill color from the facia toward the ground. If there is a railing then an assortment of pots and more plants of varying types begin to cluster up on the flat surface. Planter boxes and clay pots appear like runway markers down the sides of wide front porch steps. Stately terra cotta pots and urns mark the front approach to many a home. Many different styles of well-dressed porches can be chosen from and created but the fact remains that you must dress that porch. I am all for this dressing of porches. There is no bare rail space left on my own deck any summer. There have been years that the front porch was virtually hidden behind the curtain of flowers and ferns. Greenhouses across America do a fabulous job of turning out a lot of beautiful annual containers. Delight will seize your senses the moment you step into the retail greenhouse in April and May. The warm humid atmosphere is a jungle of rainbow colors all grown to perfection. Your hair may go flat in there but it is worth the leisurely trip down the aisles. It could be hours later before you can manage to drag yourself back outside again. The showing of jungle flora at its finest can hold rapt attention for very long spans of time. The selection of the perfect color statement for the porch is not made quickly or easily; finally you complete the mission inside the glass bubble. The pots are loaded into your vehicle and you are off to deck out your porch and patio. Some merely hang the pots just as they are from the hooks at the roofline. Others remove the hanger and slid into the yawning cavity of ornamental pots and urns strategically place for visual effect. Moss baskets, clean plastic pots and new terra cotta all filled with a garden of earthly delights festoon porches, decks and patios from sea to shining sea by Memorial Day. The greenhouse did its job keeping that container feed and watered in optimum performance levels at perfect temperatures for its rapid growth. The fact that you get to cast your eyes upon that beauty every day fills your soul with a feeling nothing else would impart. The convenience of being able to walk in a store and carry out very mature and lovely mixtures of plants only hardy in the tropics is one that America enjoys with gusto. The adoption of a moss basket while visually stunning compared to the same in a plastic hanging pot shows you nothing of the road that lies ahead for the two of you. Consumers like the fact that that huge 15 moss basket is light as a feather and easy to tote around. The one fact that everyone seems to not grasp is that the beautiful things you have just adopted are planted in a mixture designed to not hold moisture and drain out very rapidly. Those plants are addicted to drip-line water and food intravenous nutrition turned on and off by a computer if you will. While they will adjust to you only feeding them once a month, they cannot go without the correct amount of moisture throughout a day in the hot dry air and relentless sun. Not if you want them to remain lush and alive, which is most likely the full intention behind you purchasing them. Plastic containers planted by a greenhouse will hold moisture twice as long as a moss basket. The breeze can go right through the moss causing it to air-dry the potting medium at a rapid pace, add heat to that air and the dryness happens even faster. Inside a greenhouse there is no breeze, the still air is filled with humidity. That non-moving humid atmosphere breeds pests and disease. To ward off rot and other unwanted occurrences, the growers must use rapidly drying content in their pots or face loosing vast quantities of plants to problems that occur in the greenhouse bubble. Once out in the real world, you must supply enough moisture to the same pots to help them thrive in an alien atmosphere. Fuchsias in moss baskets even when watered before you left for work will most likely be beginning to droop by about 2 pm and you will not be home for at least 4 more hours. If you only for one evening forget to water those Ivy Geraniums they will show signs of damage by the next morning. An occasional slip up is usually repairable, but let it happen one too many times and you will undoubtedly have a basket full of toast colored has-beens. The best outcome with all of these beautiful plants is achieved if you repot them in a larger container than the one you got it in with real soil mixed with a bit of sphagnum and pearlite for drainage and cover the top of that sphagnum core with some soil as well. That simple inch of soil around and under the existing quick-dry core will help it hold moisture better until you return home at the end of the day. Real soil in a moss basket is not going to work however as the soil will wash out with draining water and deposit mud on the floor beneath it. Moss baskets are very thirsty things. You might consider creating your own drip-line irrigation system for them and other hanging baskets. All the parts are available at Home Depot, including inexpensive timers you can put on your hose and set to go on and off at intervals throughout the day. This would be the optimum solution as even when you go on vacation, it will water your hanging pots and you will not have to rely on a neighbor or family member to do this for you. I have found that I have far better luck with my annual baskets if I buy the plants small and pot the baskets myself with real soil and pearlite so they do not get water logged. No the pots will not be overflowing until the end of June, but if I forget to water them one night they will be fine and not get too dry before the next morning. I can with my busy schedule keep nice looking plants on the front porch until the frost takes them out at the end of well-dressed porch season. One of these days when I find the time to install a drip-line water system I will go back to buying my hanging plant baskets from a local greenhouse. Until them, I am just as happy with not cooking them all to a crisp while I am madly dashing through my hectic schedule that does not take me past the front porch so that I am reminded to water the plants everyone sees from the road. Some day I will have lovely moss baskets of fabulous red & purple Fuchsias there instead of dependable old Geraniums. European Human Hair Wig - How Much Does It Really Cost?

April 20th, 2008 by envoypfeilschifter

By Franek Migaszewski I am sure you have wondered what the truth is about the prices of wigs made from European human hair. From shop to shop you will find a huge variation in prices, anywhere from 300 USD to as high as 10.000 USD (!). So let me take you through each step of the process of producing high quality handmade wigs, and show the real costs. Firstly, take the acquisition of hair. The cost of hair for one wig (0,2 0,4 kg) varies from 30 to 40 USD throughout most Eastern European countries. There is little variation there, but an important additional cost is incurred by high-quality wig-makers who collect hair in an appropriate and well-controlled way. The best wig-makers visit hairdressers and care for the hair themselves, using no middleman. They do not buy hair from wholesalers because wholesalers blend hair, because it is so time-consuming to acquire really good hair. One simply has to find a girl among hairdressers clients that has beautiful, healthy hair and who wants it cut. The hairdresser can offer a free service to such a girl and actually pay her for her hair - and clearly both sides benefit from such a transaction. But this shows that, by its very nature, acquisition of good-quality hair cannot be a simple large-scale automatic process. That explains why outside of Eastern Europe the price of acquiring good quality hair is skyrocketing - not because the hair in itself is expensive, but because of its rarity. It is difficult to imagine a large-scale cheap process of acquiring high quality human hair in European countries. Second, take the other materials used in making wigs. These are not expensive and their costs do not exceed 50 USD for a typical wig. These are the materials used to produce a cap. More and more wig-makers are now buying ready-made caps, so called “monofilament”, which are gaining popularity and their cost is not very high. Third, take the labor involved in making high quality handmade wigs. This is the main cost factor. Handmade wig needs at least a week to be produced by an experienced expert worker. It takes a week of hard work, with each hair being knitted to the cap with a very small crochet-needle or glued with a special glue. In the case of long hair, the production time could be two to three weeks. Reliable wig-makers knit hair with a double-knot which makes the construction much more durable but needs some extra work-time. Depending on the type of wig, length of hair and type of cap the cost of labor is from 150 to 300 USD. Finally, you cannot forget other typical business costs like investments amortization, management costs, taxes, insurances, rent, and profit. Altogether, the price of a handmade human hair wig made from European hair cannot be lower than 500-600 USD even for the shortest hair. There is no upper limit and it only depends on how much a customer is willing to pay, but before you pay 1000 USD or more for your wig remember the real costs of its creation. And now for a real mystery. Why are European human hair wigs not made in China where labor costs are much lower than in Poland, Russia, or the Czech Republic? The main reason is no good quality European human hair available in large enough quantities to make profitable large-scale production in China possible. This is because wig-makers in Eastern European countries are buying all of the available hair for their own production. Surprising? — but that is how it is. And that is why most of wigs produced in China are made of Asian hair or blended hair widely available on a wholesale market. Franek Migaszewski is co-founder and manager of Wiggywigs.com site, the first wig vendor from Eastern Europe selling human hair wigs directly to the western markets on the Internet. How to Find Antique Collectibles

April 19th, 2008 by envoypfeilschifter

By Monique Hawkins Are you an antique collector? Are you a serious collector that is looking for a specific antique such as a certain piece of furniture, a unique car, or perhaps a specific antique painting that suits your taste? If so, then you know it is not always an easy task to find the items you are looking for, especially if you don’t know where to look. Maybe you just love to shop for different antiques on a smaller scale. This could include collectible items such as toys and figurines. There are many different types of antique art that can be purchased and even a wide variety of antique books may be found. The key is to know where to find all of the great items that are out there. Finding your antiques So the question that many collectors have is just where to find the good stuff anyway? The thing that makes being an antique collector different is that you can’t just go to the store and buy the item you want, no matter how much money you have. It can literally be an Easter egg hunt to try to find the treasures you seek. When you are shopping for antique collectibles but do not have a specific item in mind or if you do not plan to spend a large amount of money, then a flea market is a great place to shop. However, if it is a specific item you are looking for, then many sites on the Internet can provide you with the location of these items. For instance, if you are looking for an automatic musical instrument, then MBSI is an organization that can provide you with many of these antiques. Several of these musical instruments may be viewed, bought or traded by its members at the conventions that are held. There are also many advertisements on the organization?s site that list antiques that people sell all over the country. Another great organization that can supply you with automatic musical instruments is AMICA. This site can stun its visitors with their elegant antique player pianos. Organizations such as these can provide you with information on dealers both locally and from around the world. There are also many organizations that let you subscribe to lists that will tell you when they have sales and auctions for antiques. Looking Online There are many places online where you can look for antiques. The great thing about the internet is that it brings a much larger world straight to you. GoAntiques.com is a site that can help you locate a specific item by pinpointing precisely where you should look. If the item is being sold in more than one place, they can give you this information, allowing you the opportunity to find the best price available for the antique of your choice. Anteq.com is another useful site. This company caters to antique collectors, antique dealers, and antique malls of the world. Anteq.com is committed to meeting the needs of the antiques & collectibles community by providing professional software and support. eBay is yet another popular place to look online for antique collectibles. There are people from all over the world buying, selling, and trading collectibles and antiques on eBay. Some of the best deals out there can be found on eBay. Another great thing about finding your collectibles online is the wonderful and wider selection than you would find at a local show or sale. If you do not have a specific item in mind but are looking in certain categories such as, books, paintings, or coins, online sites such as eBay is a terrific place to look for these types of antiques. Antique jewelry and dishes are also a big hit with collectors and can be found on this site. It is one of the fastest and easiest ways to shop for collectibles. Joining Clubs and Groups You might also want to check to see if your local town or city has an antique collector’s club or group that you can join. This would be a way for you to meet other people who share your passion and who can guide you to some of the best places to find what you are looking for. If none can be found in your town, why not start one yourself? Antique collecting is a passion for many people. Finding the right collectibles may not always be easy. However, with perseverance and patience, you will be sure to find that perfect antique collectible you have been seeking. 8 Ways to Fill a Workshop in a Bum Economy

April 16th, 2008 by envoypfeilschifter

By Suzanne Falter-Barns Yes, you can fill a workshop when spending is down and buyers are wary. If your topic is clear, your marketing materials well-done, your product solid and your title catchy, success shouldnt be tough. The fact is that people are as hungry as ever for the inspiration and stimulus a workshop provides, even when theyre nervous about money. And even though most bum economies recover over time, you may find the following tricks helpful enough to keep using even in good times! 1. Tailor the workshop to the economy. In other words, acknowledge the problem. So if your workshop is about helping women over 50 live their dreams, change it to Living Your Dreams Over 50 Even When the Economy is Down. Or make it about finding your dreams after being laid off, or managing fear while pursuing your dreams in a poor economy. Your fundamental message doesnt have to change you just dress it up in slightly different clothing. 2. Use unconventional marketing methods. Advertising and flyers may not be the most effective way to enroll a workshop in lean times. For one thing, affordable ads are not usually big enough to effectively describe a workshop, unless its very targeted and easy to get, i.e. quitting smoking, or stress-reduction. If youre teaching motivational or inspirational work, consider using an affiliate program, viral email marketing, distributing articles through targeted ezines, working your personal network, or making yourself available as a guest on local TV or radio talk shows. Best of all is a combination of all of the above. 3. Make your niche one with a pipeline. Be careful not to pick a tiny niche market that is hard to access. Instead, a good rule of thumb is to look for a niche market with marketing channels already in place. For instance, one successful workshop leader I know targets retirees on the RV-Camping circuit. Many US campgrounds offer classes and other stimulating perks to visitors, and since RVers often stay for several nights or even weeks, this makes a workshop a likely hit. She simply has to talk to management, and they put her workshop in place for her. Participants magically show! Hospitals with neighborhood wellness programs, bookstores with evening events, and community center Teen programs are also good venues. 4. Pitch a co-operative venture with another business. One fun way to reach your niche is to approach another businesss clientele. For instance, if youre offering stress-reduction workshops, arrange a tie in with the local health club or weight loss group. Look for businesses that attract people who would logically be drawn to your product as well. Then approach that business and offer something great. You can sell them your workshop at a reduced rate (a special offer just for their members, which they can use as a perk.) Or you could hold a workshop on their premises at your usual fee, and pay them a percentage of the gate. Or you could simply offer to exchange advertising plugs for each others businesss. (This works well if you communicate with your clients via an email newsletter or direct mail.) 5. Offer a FREE mini-workshop. In tough times, people need more convincing to buy. So offer a free sample of your workshop (a forty minute talk, say) at a local venue such as a public library or church coffee hour. Give participants time to ask questions, and have lots of handouts available about your bigger, more elaborate (paid) workshop to be held a few weeks later. And be sure to make the occasional reference to it in your free talk. Finally, make your free talk compelling and packed with good stuff. It can be a very general overview or taste of your more fleshed out paid workshop. (You dont have to give away all your goodies, of course, but dont be afraid to share a few key pieces.) Wary buyers cannot resist excellence. 6. Lower the price. Not always the most fun option, but one that works especially if you have a themed sale, such as Wipe Out the Winter Blahs Special or a Kick Off the New Year With a Bang. If possible, try to position your price reduction as a limited time gift for your clients one that ties in with a particular need or time of year. This lets them know you are, in fact, thinking of them and their best interests. 7. Offer bonuses. We all love something free, so come up with some highly desirable bonuses that are just irresistible. These can be free reports that get downloaded automatically, or sent with registration info. Or it could be a tangible product, such as a book, a mug, 8. Enroll a friend for a discount. Or if you dont want to offer a discount, encourage clients to bring a friend who can act as an on-going supporter with the work of the workshop. (And, of course, they can provide the same to their friend.) Such support is actually one of the best ways to get your material to stick, so your clients get more on-going value from the workshop, so this plan is a real win-win. Consider tailoring the workshop to pairs such as mothers and daughters, work buddies (great for stress reduction!), married couples, fathers and sons, or best friends. If you pitch it to couples, you could market it to resorts as part of a Second Honeymoon or Mom-Daughter Getaway package weekend. Unemployment Blues: The Value of Temporary Work

By Virginia Bola, PsyD Although the job market has improved over the past year, many employers are still reluctant to make a long term commitment to growing their employee rolls until it is clear that a solid economic expansion is underway. They need new staff to handle the increase in orders and customer demands but are loath to hire permanent workers who may have to be cut in a few months if business stagnates. Any reduction in force carries major headaches for a company: employee morale falls, lawsuits arise, precious time is eaten up in non-productive meetings, and severance packages cut into narrowing profit margins. Their solution is often to rely on temporary agencies to provide needed manpower without any precipitous long term commitment. It is estimated, by a well-regarded labor research group, that fully 25% of the jobs created during the past year have been temporary positions! How can this work to your advantage? Working for a temporary agency has some drawbacks but also a number of positive aspects. The primary negative is the lack of investment in your future. While the hourly wage may be similar, or even better, than a permanent employee would receive, you remain on the periphery of the company’s organization. Temps are often assigned the more routine tasks which require less intensive training. This makes it more difficult for your competence to be recognized. You are not seriously considered for promotional opportunities nor invited to advanced training or management classes. It also has personal repercussions. You are uncertain how long you will be needed and tend to develop a strong sense of insecurity. After all, your contract could be terminated without warning through a quick telephone call to the agency. Because you want to minimize the emotional devastation of a sudden departure, you tend to avoid becoming too close to coworkers and perform your duties in something of a vacuum, one step removed from the camaraderie of the permanent work team. All that being said, there are some pretty inviting advantages to exploring temporary assignments. Within the framework of your long-term career goals, a temporary position nicely fills in that void on your resume caused by a lengthy period of unemployment. It demonstrates to a potential employer that you are an individual who is vested in being productive even under circumstances where your true talents are barely tapped. Temporary agencies seldom require extensive background investigation so if there is a blip or two on your work or personal record, it will probably be overlooked. When a future permanent position presents itself, the more distant the blip, the less weight it will carry in the hiring decision. Entering a workplace as a temp puts you in a very different framework than any mere applicant for work. You become privy to the company’s ethics and philosophy so you can better determine if this is somewhere you would be interested in for permanent work. If you find the atmosphere comfortable, you will perform well. Assuming that the company is growing, and the local economic expansion continues, you are in an excellent position to be considered for permanent retention. Many employers see temporary workers as individuals undergoing a lengthy interview. After weeks or months of good productivity, timeliness, consistent attendance, and reliability, you no longer present the risks attached to the hiring of new employees after only an hour or two of interviewing. Many agencies will let you know in advance that this is a “Temp to Perm” assignment, meaning that if you cut the mustard, you will be offered a permanent position. On the other hand, if you find that company goals and procedures are at odds with your personal values, you can get out before any commitment is made. Since your employer is actually the agency, you can cut and run from any assignment without it impacting your work history. You take a different position through the same agency and your resume is unflawed by your decision to make a change. Assuming that you are working in an industry of interest, temporary work provides an invaluable opportunity for networking. Make the effort to get to know your new coworkers and it is highly likely that they either know of opportunities in similar companies or know someone who has such inside information. Finally, there is the old saw of “Everyone wants to hire you when you’re working but no one is interested when you’re unemployed.” There is certainly a grain of truth in that rather cynical observation. No matter how bad the local economy may be, or how the effects of offshore job flight have affected your industry, there is always a little kernel of doubt in an interviewer’s mind: what did you do wrong to lose your job? Could you possibly have been fingered because you were the weak link? Was the choice of you, over someone else, related to interpersonal or disciplinary problems that made you an easy target? When you are actively working, even if only on a temporary basis, such doubts don’t even enter an interviewer’s mind. They are more concerned about whether you will be willing to make a change - a point of speculation that bodes well for you in a potential hiring situation. If you are offered alternative permanent work, you are sitting in the proverbial catbird’s seat. You can accept the position if you find it tempting. You can decline if you don’t think it’s a good fit, knowing that you still have your temp job to keep food on the table and allay that desperation of “I’ll take anything” that sets in after a few months out of work. And, finally, you have the option of going back to your temp work and letting your present boss know that you have been offered a position elsewhere that you are seriously considering. If the company likes you, let them negotiate a counter-offer and then go with the best opportunity for you. Quick Weight Loss -A Fast Way to Lose Weight?

April 10th, 2008 by envoypfeilschifter

By Abbie Frank Fasting, or more accurately starving yourself to lose weight can produce very fast weight loss. The problem with this and so many other weight loss plans is that sooner or later you need to go back to managing your own food. Understand that any type of quick weight loss that takes you out of your normal patterns is usually not a long-term solution. My normal patterns, I mean, your personal food choices and selections. Almost anyone can lose weight with those portion control meal plans that come prepackaged and prepared. The problem becomes apparent when you quit buying those prepackaged foods and need to decide what you will eat from the refrigerator or a restaurant menu. Understand that fasting and weight loss seem to go together well, because not eating has always been a guaranteed path to weight loss. The old adage that to lose weight, you need to eat less and exercise more continues to be true. For those of you who think that as long as you’re thinner, it’s worth the risk, you need to rethink that outlook. Fast too long and your body will begin to experience some fun and exciting side effects like possibly kidney stones. The pain is so unbelievable and can last for hours and even days. The real fun begins however when you get past them through your urine. Believe it or not, kidney stones are just a minor inconvenience in relation to some of the more serious health problems you can create with fasting. Beyonce Knowles appeared on The Oprah Winfrey Show and claimed she lost 20 pounds on a Lemonade Fast. That’s probably as far as a lot of people, desperate to lose weight might have heard. Glossed over were the following facts: 1. Beyonc is 25 years old. Younger people are better able to tolerate abusing their bodies than the rest of us. 2. She had the benefit of childhood metabolism. It’s no secret that our metabolisms slow down as we age. This means it’s more difficult to lose weight, no matter what diet plan are fast is used. 3. Beyonc admitted she was very irritable while on the diet. 4. Being rich, she had a nutritionalist available in most likely an exercise program monitored by a personal coach. The most important point, however, and was that after she completed the scenes for the movie, she immediately gained back all of those 20 pounds. There is just no way that you can maintain weight loss due to a fast without major changes in your dietary eating habits and/or exercise regimen. What any of us and a diet and go back to normal eating patterns, we tend to put all the weight lost back on along with a couple more pounds. The extra poundage is caused by our bodies having just experienced starvation. Our bodies will want to add a little more reserve (fat) to our frames to protect us from the next period of starvation that may come our way. Fasting for a day or two at a time can actually be beneficial to weight loss by improving your metabolism. In the end any diet that doesn’t consider maintaining adequate vitamins, minerals, nutrients, carbohydrates and proteins should be considered dangerous to your health. When Acne isn’t Acne: an Introduction to Rosacea

April 7th, 2008 by envoypfeilschifter

By C. L. Jackson Acne is a well-known and extremely common skin disease that affects millions around the world. Although this disorder generally begins during the teenage years, it can persist or even start in adulthood. Symptoms of acne depend on the general type, of which there are two. Non-inflammatory acne is apparent only close to the skin where blackheads and whiteheads can be seen. Inflammatory acne, on the other hand, is characterized by red pimples and pustules, and sometimes even inflamed cysts and nodules. When the skin starts to change, get red, and show bumps, the immediate perception is that this is acne. When acne treatment fails, however, it sometimes turns out that the skin change was due to another, less understood skin condition called rosacea. Rosacea is a progressive vascular skin disorder that starts as a flush on the central part of the face and across the cheeks. Sometimes the flush is found on the neck, chest, ears, or scalp, but this is less common. Other early rosacea symptoms include persistent redness, red bumps on the skin, burning sensations, and small blood vessels that can be seen just under the surface of the skin. There are four main subtypes of rosacea. Just as rosacea can coincide with acne, the subtypes are not mutually exclusive. These four subtypes are: (1) Erythematotelangiectatic rosacea–persistent redness along with easy flushing or blushing. Small blood vessels are often visible under the skin. (2) Papulopustular rosacea–easily confused with acne, this subtype has persistent redness accompanied by red bumps, some of which may contain pus. (3) Phymatous rosacea–thickened skin, nodules on the surface of the skin, and enlargement of the nose, including small blood vessels near the surface of the skin. (4) Ocular rosacea–eyes and eyelids become dry and irritated. There may also be itching, tearing, burning, and other strange bodily sensations. As a disorder, experts still know relatively little about rosacea. One common theory about its origin is that it’s a consequence of damaged blood vessels that were weakened by repeated dilations, such as that caused by blushing, strenuous exercise, and stress. This fits with the subpopulations that are generally most affected with rosacea; many are fair-skinned with European or Celtic origins, and most between 30 and 60 years of age. Women develop rosacea more frequently than men, although it is generally less severe. Although rosacea is not yet curable, it can certainly be treated and controlled to a large degree. Controlling the disorder usually involves preventing flare-ups. Heat, exercise, spicy foods and drinks, alcohol, wind, menopause, stress, and harsh facial products can all trigger rosacea symptoms. Sunlight is another well-known irritant, so wearing a good sunscreen is a key preventative measure. Dermatologists can recommend several courses of treatment for rosacea, including oral antibiotics, topical antibiotics, and eye drops. A gentle cleansing regimen is also suggested. Over 45 million people worldwide suffer from some form of rosacea, yet despite these statistics, the disorder is still relatively unknown. Part of this problem is that the more obvious symptoms are sometimes shared with other skin disorders, including acne. Many people take a wait-and-see approach to skin disorders, assuming that they will get easier with time. Since this is not the case for rosacea, the condition may get much worse before treatment is sought, and the skin may take longer to recover. The important thing to note about rosacea is that it can be treated and the earlier the treatment the better. If you think there is a chance that you may have rosacea, make sure you talk to your doctor to rule out this disorder. Author C. L.
