Do you Have a Platform?

Monday, March 31st, 2008

By Roger Parker Platforms are as important as your ability to do your job and satisfy your clients Quality is no longer enough to guarantee success. Today, competence is assumed- and there is competition everywhere. To control your destiny, you need a platform. Platform refers to a process based on a unique message and a way of consistently communicating with your market. Examples of platforms There are several types of platforms: articles, blogs, columns, books, interviews, newsletters, podcasts, postcards, speaking, teleseminars, and websites. The crucial issue is not which type of platform you use, but whether or not you have a unique message and that you consistently enhance and promote it. Advantages Platforms offer you: o A position that visibly differentiates you from your competition. o An independent “stage” to present from, a way of packaging your expertise in a unique and easily recognizable format. o Market education. Platforms help you communicate your point of view in a way that creates a “halo of trust” surrounding all your products and services. o Freedom. You control your destiny, free from dependence or interference. o Self-improvement. Platforms encourage you to refine your ideas and your ability to express them. o Networking. Your platform will expand and reinforce a growing referral network. Prerequisites Successful platforms require: o Commitment. You must invest in yourself by mastering the resources needed to create and distribute your message. o Consistency. Your platform must be constantly visible. You never know when prospects will be ready to buy. o Efficiency. To achieve constant visibility, your platform must be inexpensive and easy to update with new information. Steps to success 1. Choose your message. 2. Create a way to distribute it. 3. Promote online with a website you can update by yourself. 1. Message Your core message should describe your mission, or value proposition, (i.e., how you can help your market). Your goal is to become personally associated with the solution to a widespread problem your target market suffers from. Your message should reflect your competence as well as well as your values, style, and enthusiasm. Your message will help you identify the appropriate topics and information. 2. Distribution An effective platform requires a source, or nucleus, that is recycled and expanded. For many, the starting point is a monthly One-Page Newsletter. Each issue offers enough space to introduce and address just about any topic, educating your market and proving your competence. Later, you can expand each issue into: o Articles and columns for publication and syndication, media interviews, etc. o Presentations, audios, speeches, teleconferences, podcasts, training, workshops. o Online content and incentives to attract search engine traffic, reward your clients, and build your opt-in e-mail newsletter circulation list. o Books and e-books. Books are the highest level of a platform. Writing a book becomes practical if prepare each issue of your newsletter so it can be later expanded into a chapter of a book. 3. Website You must be able to update your website yourself, without waiting for-and paying-someone else to do the work. Websites have to be continually updated. You need to provide new information on a consistent basis. Avoid fancy “art directed” websites; these are usually too inflexible to be easily and continuously updated. Getting started Start by analyzing your core competencies, your market, and your competition. Then, determine the best ways to communicate, and expand, it as consistently and efficiently as possible. Progress typically proceeds best when you work with a mentor, or coach, who will guide you through the process and help you take a fresh look at yourself. Roger C. Photography And The Cell Phone

Saturday, March 29th, 2008

By [http://ezinearticles.com/?expert=Roberto_Sedycias]Roberto Sedycias Nearly every modern cell phone (telefone celular) has a camera feature. Though they are far away from modern age digital camera, cell phone cameras can still be used to produce good quality photographs. The cell phone (telefone celular) has some additional features that are not yet available on digital cameras and so may even be able to provide some advantages. The best way to obtain quality photographs is to understand the specifications that are available on these devices, enabling you to make an informed decision when choosing your mobile product, ensuring that it meets your requirements. The size of the cell phone (telefone celular) screen will affect the quality of viewing on your phone only. It will not affect the quality of your photograph when downloaded to your computer. However, the pixels that your cell phone camera uses will affect the quality of the image a great deal. The minimum resolution you should use is 1.0 mega pixels if photographic images are an important feature for you. Higher resolution of 3.0 mega pixels and up is available on current cell phones (telefone celular). The higher the number of pixels, the better quality the photographic image will be when reproduced. This is because the pixels are the amount of dots used to create the image; the more that are used, the less the image will break up when enlarged. The memory size of your device will directly affect the number of photographs that you can store. This will affect your output, and also give you less scope for getting that perfect shot. Your device will detail how much memory it contains, and this amount is usually very low, to store only a few photographic images. However, the memory capacity can be supplemented by purchasing a memory card that is compatible with your cell phone (telefone celular). The largest currently available is as much as 2 Gigabytes, which can store large numbers of photographs. The exact number will vary as the number of pixels directly affects the amount of memory used. The settings of your picture image can often be changed also. The picture quality is better the higher the resolution you choose. Lower resolutions take up less memory and so can be useful if you just want to send images to friends and family, if are running low on space or if the quality is not of importance. It is also important that you can store your pictures. If you purchase a cell phone memory card (telefone celular), make sure that it also be compatible with your computer or that it can be hooked up to a USB that is computer compatible. Your device should also come with a USB that you can use to download your pictures. This enables you to clear your cell phone regularly, maximising the use of the camera feature. Once stored, your photographs can be manipulated using programs such as Photoshop, as with any other photographic image. A major advantage of a camera is that it can be used to send pictures direct to friends and family with a compatible cell phone (telefone celular). These can be sent via multi media messages, which although relatively expensive are now appearing in cell phone contracts as part of a package. Digital photos can also be sent via email if the cell phone (telefone celular) is internet enabled. Any photographic image can be sent for free via infra red or Bluetooth to another compatible device. This is an excellent way of sharing images, without the need for downloading first, which is both fast and functional. This means cell phones do have an advantage over other photographic devices to a degree, as they do not yet have this feature. Forget Conventional Marketing - Embrace the Web!

Friday, March 28th, 2008

By Lee Traupel Tactical marketing processes are once again undergoing fundamental shifts from traditional to web-based processes. Many traditional marketing firms/agencies are still touting the tried and true to their clients; i.e. Tradeshow attendance, Print, Traditional PR, TV and Radio. However, these conventional marketing processes work best for broad market awareness and/or branding, especially for a Fortune 1K company with significant resources to spend on demographic analysis, test marketing and more test marketing. It’s much more difficult for a smaller company (startup to $50M per annum) to leverage the economies of scale that are typically available for a larger company for the media buy and operational efficiencies. It’s obvious that lifestyle and business processes are shifting towards a much greater dependence on digital media - people are traveling less due to cost issues and the ever-increasing speed of business is underscoring the usage of the Internet for information and research. If you’re a small to medium sized business the chances are that you’ve probably cut your marketing budget significantly - by eliminating or scaling back tradeshow attendance, trade magazine advertising and/or direct mail in favor of response driven marketing on the web that can be deployed faster and more cost-effectively than traditional marketing methods. Capturing leads from a web site generated by opt-in e-mail, newsletter inserts, text link advertising and/or other forms of pay per click marketing is still the absolute best way to generate leads that are quantifiable as soon as they are generated. You have the ability to easily track where the lead came from and via what interactive advertising process; assuming this has been setup for you by your interactive ad agency or with the online publisher. And, there are typically no lead times like more traditional marketing processes - we’ve created and deployed campaigns (creative, media buy, testing, ROI analysis, etc.) for our clients in 3-5 working days in some cases. There are some pitfalls to web-based lead generation and follow through that you need to be aware of as you deploy an interactive campaign. Here are five of the most important “gotchas” that you need to think about as you build an interactive lead generation program around your web site: 1) Don’t make it difficult for people to contact your company - make sure your web site really communicates with your prospects - by “communicating” I mean by providing telephone contacts, e-mail address and/or a lead capture form that is short. Note: this form has to be supported by a published Privacy Policy (”we won’t divulge your info to a third party under any circumstances”) and it absolutely must be short; i.e. don’t request any more than baseline information, name, phone, e-mail and address, augmented with a comment box. 2) Your marketing objectives have to be supported by your sales team - the sales team has to be incentivized to respond to inbound e-mails and requests for information via a contact form in a timely manner, within 24 hours or sooner. If you have a geographically dispersed sales team then make this clear on the web site by providing specific contact points for states, regions and countries. 3) Make sure you IT person/department attends your marketing planning meetings with your sales team - your web site will need some type of a lead capture setup that redistributes leads based on function and/or geographical responsibility. Your IT staff has to create a database solution that captures, stores and distributes leads - this does not need to be done in-house, products like Act (the market leader in contact management software) are now web-enabled, you can capture leads via a web server and share leads with others via a browser and very inexpensively. 4) We don’t advocate popup advertising for most of our client’s advertising campaigns. But, we have “crossed over to the other side” and we do (highly) recommend using popups on our clients’ web sites to present opportunities that in turn capture leads. Studies have shown effective popup lead captures increase lead generation by 40-85% depending on the market segment. Popups can be set so they only launch on a frequency basis per session (visit to a web site) or a number of times for a specific visitor - they don’t have to setup so they are intrusive and annoying. 5) Last but not least (drum roll) - make the customer’s usability experience the most important aspect of your web site. Create a user interface (”experience”) that is pleasant for your visitors; i.e. use standard universal (top of page and local page left) menus, utilize 2-3 sentence paragraphs with lots of white space, don’t overload your pages with graphics that slow down load times and make sure your contact points (phone, e-mail) are readily available from every page. So, to summarize; advertising is shifting from traditional to web-based or interactive if you will - so, to get on board this tsunami build a web site that communicates with your prospects/customers, provide contact points via telephone and e-mail via the site, involve your IT and Sales staff with the lead capture process so they are all stakeholders and utilize popups to accelerate your lead capturing. Understanding Financial Statements

Wednesday, March 26th, 2008

By Matt Bacak The value of the accurate financial statements generated is undisputed. This is as financial statements are like windows into the health of a company. Just by viewing financial statements, adept business owners will be able to determine the strengths and weaknesses at the time that the statement was generated. With this, the owner can then chart the way into the future for the company, by addressing the weaknesses and capitalizing on the strengths that the company has. The two main financial statements within any company are the balance sheet and the Profit and Loss statements. The balance sheet provides anyone with a snapshot of the assets and liabilities within a company at any one point in time. This essentially means that the balance sheet shows what the company has and how much they own others. Apart from that, the equation asset = liabilities + capital always holds true within a balance sheet. The liabilities and capital sections indicate the sources of funds for the company while the assets indicate how the company uses the funds that it has. Most importantly, the liability and capital sections indicate money owed to creditors as well as invested amount. If you look closely, you will realize that both of these are obligations of the company that need to be paid. By analyzing financial ratios that are generated by numbers on a balance sheet, a business owner is able to tell how well the company collects their accounts receivables, how fast the inventory is moving out and replenished, as well as how much exposure the company has towards debt. The typical company balance sheet will consist of fixed assets and current assets such cash, account receivables, inventory and note receivables. Current assets comprise of assets that can be liquidated fairly quickly and easily in order to be turned into cash. On the other hand, fixed assets are amortized over an extended period of time and are not so easily sold to recover cash. On the liability section, fixed liabilities include long-term debt of usually more than 12 months of age or contingent liabilities. The current liabilities however are represented by mainly accounts payable and notes payable as well as short term loans. If there is inadequate cash within the company, current liabilities have the ability to drag the company down. The final element of the balance sheet, the Equity is the amount of capital financing that has been injected into the company. With this, the owner’s investment into the business is shown in the balance sheet. The Profit and Loss statement is used to determine if a company is making a profit or a loss within a specified operations period. The revenue obtained in a period is stated in this statement, and all direct and indirect costs incurred are deducted from the revenue. With this, the profit for that period is obtained, where profits are compared with the previous year’s performance level. Profits with which taxation has not yet been accounted for are known as gross debt, while net profits are debt in which all costs have been deducted from. In conclusion, being able to read financial statements is an advantage for any business owner. Interpreting financial statements are ever important in business, as it allows for the owner to take action before things become worse. By reading financial ratios, a business owner will know what needs to be done before the situation of the company changes. Alternatively, reading financial ratios will also help the business owner plan for the future, by incorporating the leverage on existing strengths of the company. Metal Gazebos: Advantages and Disadvantages

Monday, March 24th, 2008

By Ken Wilssens If you want a gazebo that will last for many years to come and one that is virtually maintenance free, then take a look at the various styles of metal gazebos that will enhance your garden. When it comes to long lasting structures with strength, stability and sturdiness, then you can’t beat the qualities of metal. Build a simple gazebo with four sides, go all out with a 12-sided structure or even choose an oval design. All these styles are within the realm of possibility with metal, just as they are with wood. When you are choosing metal as the material for your gazebo, you can choose between wrought iron or aluminum. Aluminum gazebos are the cheapest, but for the best gazebo, steel or wrought iron is the best choice. This is because of the higher levels of durability of these metals, meaning they can stand up better to high winds and harsher weather. It is also unlikely that vandals can damage your gazebo if you choose the more expensive metal, thus saving you money over the long term. One of the disadvantages of a gazebo made from metal is that these structures usually don’t have a roof. You can choose to have a canopy fitted over the top. The heavy canvas will give you the shade you need from the sun and inclement weather. The open style, though, is perfect if you want to have the gazebo double as an area where you can grow plants and keep them in a protected area. The advantages of using metal as your material of choice far outweigh this one disadvantage. You will never have to worry about the structure rotting, being infested with insects and you will never have to do maintenance, such as scraping, staining or painting. When you add in the fact that the metal won’t twist or warp, you have a gazebo that will outlast you. Abdominoplasty (Tummy Tuck) Information

Saturday, March 22nd, 2008

By Margaret Wommack Abdominoplasty, commonly known as a tummy tuck, is a major surgical procedure for men and women generally in good shape and health but who have large fat deposits around their abdomen or have and excess of loose skin. Abdominoplasty can reduce protruding abdominal fat but it does leave a lengthy, permanent, sometimes visible scar that runs the length of the hipbones. Also during abdominoplasty, the vertical muscles of the abdomen are tightened. Often, people who have abdominoplasty surgery are women who dont intend to bear more children and whose previous pregnancies stretched their abdominal muscles or people suffering from obesity whose skin elasticity has diminished. During the procedure patients are either given a sedative and local anesthesia or general anesthesia. An incision is made between the hipbones and around the belly button. Then the skin is separated from the abdominal wall and lifted over the vertical abdominal muscles. These muscles are then sewn together to tighten them. Next the skin is stretched down and flattened and the remaining skin left over the incision is cut away and the skin flap is sewn into its new place. After surgery, supportive garments should be worn and after three weeks all sutures will have been removed. Post-operative exercise is encouraged to tone the muscles and healthy lifestyle and diet is encouraged to maintain the results. While abdominoplasty leaves a significant scar, it doesnt show under most clothes and under some swim suits and most people are happy with the procedure because they look better, feel healthier, and are in less pain. Chakra Healing

Saturday, March 22nd, 2008

By Susanna Kompogiorgas We can heal the body by healing our chakra, but we must first understand about the chakra - what they are, and how we can work with them. The seven major chakras are energy vortexes located along the spinal column of the body. Picture a wheel spinning as it travels inward from the front of your body, to the center and towards the back of the body from where it spins outward. These spinning wheels are the chakra. These vortexes are energy pools, taking in energy from outside and allow it to circulate in the body. This energy is life force energy, or chi. The chakra, therefore, through their vibrational frequency, draw life force into our body and allow it to flow throughout the body, along the energy pathways, or meridians. This nourishes our tissues and organs with the vital chi force. Chi energy allows the cells of our body to renew themselves and to regenerate properly. If anything disturbs the function of the chakra, we suffer imbalances which eventually manifest as physical, mental or emotional disease. Therefore, when we undergo chakra healing we are restoring the proper function to our chakra - which will restore perfect health to our mind, body and spirit. Chakra healing focuses on the seven main chakra, The seven main chakras are located on the spinal column and there are many secondary chakras all over the body as well. These secondary chakras are smaller energy vortexes located throughout the energy pathways of the body, but they normally affect the physical state of our body only. The major chakra affect our mental and emotional states, as well as the physical. Practitioners working on chi flow, such as acupuncturists or reflexologists, use these secondary chakras to unblock chi. To be in a state of perfect wellbeing, our chakra must be vibrating, or spinning, properly - at the proper rate, or frequency. Our chakras having the right vibrational frequency means that cosmic life force energy is entering our body, and is being distributed efficiently - without any disturbance- giving our organs the vital life force they need to renew themselves and function optimally. This correct vibrational frequency ensures us of our physical, emotional, and mental health. Every chakra has an affect on different parts of the physical body, as well as different states of mind. If our chakra get stuck, and begin to function on an incorrect frequency, physical and/or mental disturbances set in. This is when we need to do chakra healing and restore wellbeing. We need to keep each chakra balanced, energized, clean and vibrating at the proper frequency. If our chakra vibrate on improper frequencies, physical, mental and emotional symptoms begin to manifest - representing the malfunction of the chakra. This is how illness develops. When we experience specific symptoms of physical, mental or emotional poor health, we know that there is a specific chakra that needs healing, and chakra healing will restore wellbeing to the body. Therefore, when physical, mental or emotional symptoms set in, this means that the chi flow has been impaired, slowed down, has become weakened or polluted. This is a direct result of our chakra being slowed down by some factor or factors that disturbed its vibrational frequency. Each of our major chakra in our body is unique - with its own unique vibrational frequency, symbol and color associated with it, and its own specific sound. Our chakra are very vulnerable to all frequencies, especially sound. The music we listen to and the sounds of our environment can either enhance our chakra or disturb them, by affecting their vibrational frequency. It is vital that the sounds of our surroundings are harmonious to us and that they are not dysfunctional - capable of throwing the vibrational frequency of our chakra out of balance. Each major chakra actually makes a sound of its own if it is functioning properly. The vibrational frequencies of colors and gemstones are capable of strengthening and enhancing our chakra. It is important to know that many environmental factors such as electricity, toxins, and other pollutants can negatively affect the vibrational frequency of our chakra. If we are exposed to toxins, electrical pollution, or sounds that disturb our chakra, we need chakra healing. By undergoing chakra healing, we cleanse our chakra from any pollutants and toxins. Then we “feed” our chakra by allowing the proper vibrational frequencies of specific colors, gemstones and sounds to flow in, enhance our chakra and restore balance. Once balance is restored, we see an improvement in the physical, mental and emotional symptoms that reflected the chakra imbalance. We also have to free ourselves from anything in our environment that could negatively affect our chakra The ultimate goal is to be able to achieve perfect frequency in all 7 major chakras. This will allow us to actually raise our whole vibrational level which allows us to perceive, feel and understand many things that are unattainable at lower frequencies. The Science of Marriage

Monday, March 17th, 2008

By Abe Kass Marital researchers can predict with an 80-85% accuracy which couples will divorce based on self-reporting information about themselves and their partner. These scientists have looked at the following predictive scales: realistic expectations, communication, conflict resolution, personality, and religious orientation. In contrast to couples that divorce, happily married couples score strongly on these five scales. REALISTIC EXPECTATIONS: Realistic expectations are closely linked with acceptance. Acceptance is probably the single greatest factor in predicting marital satisfaction and stability. There are two parts to “realistic expectations.” First a couple must be aware of and flexible about the natural changes that occur as the relationship and family go through normal transitions and maturation. It is impossible to think about, feel about and experience one’s partner the same way during courtship, as the first year of living together, as after 30 years of marriage. Families, like children, go through distinct stages of development. Each stage has its own challenges and goals. Secondly, it is essential to marital happiness that each partner tolerate the other’s peculiarities and idiosyncrasies. “He may never be the best communicator but it is ok,” may be the wife’s attitude. “She may never be well organized and tidy, but I can live with it,” may be the husband’s attitude. COMMUNICATION: Dialogue about one’s feelings, dreams, fears and ideas are what builds bridges between people. It is essential that husbands and wives share their inner lives with each other. In order for this to happen there must be a feeling of safety to support self-disclosure which comes from respectful and validating communication. Research has shown that one negative interaction such as anger or criticism can nullify 5 to 20 positive interactions. For the most part, daily communication is what makes or breaks a relationship. The challenge is to produce the greatest number of positive interactions to the fewest negative interactions. Scientists observing couples in action have seen how just a few negative comments can spoil an entire day or week. CONFLICT RESOLUTION: Being married will at times involve conflict. Two people-two minds-two temperaments. Successful conflict resolution requires three criteria. One, keep the dialogue respectful, no name calling or humiliating etc. Two, keep it contained; the divisive words should only last a few minutes and the feelings no more than an hour or two. Three, don’t change topics; stay focussed exclusively on the issue at hand and resist dragging in every perceived failure or imperfection about your partner or relationship. PERSONALITY: It is important that overall you like your partner’s personality. Unless it was a “shotgun wedding” liking your partners personality is probably true for most people. If you didn’t like your partner’s “personality,” why would you have married them? During courtship there was a strong attraction. Even after many years of marriage that attraction it is still there, either actualized or hidden in potential. Years of misunderstanding and conflict can build within a person enormous resentment and this accumulated emotion can actually change a person’s perception of their partner, leaving one unable to accurately see what he or she is actually like. RELIGIOUS ORIENTATION: Spiritual and cultural differences place major obstacles between couples. Religious orientation is the context in which the couple builds their lives and their family and defines their values. Being on different “wave length” can undermine many otherwise appropriate and reasonable efforts. It may be compared to trying to build a house on sand. Couples that overall score high on the above scales, although not necessarily perfect in all areas, share happy and meaningful lives together. If you feel your relationship has not reached its full potential in some of these key areas you can read relationship books or consult with relationship experts and apply sincere effort and surely significant improvements can be made. He concluded, after many years of clinical practice and research, that practical solutions requiring a focussed effort of no more than a few minutes a day for very specific personal and relationship problem were critically needed. Wisdom Scientific publishing house has been created to fill this need. Picking the Right Tomato for Your Garden

Saturday, March 15th, 2008

By Thomas Andrews Could you imagine where the pizza industry would be today without tomato sauce? The top two condiments in the United States, ketchup and salsa, are tomato-based. It is safe to say that the tomato is an all-American culinary entity, a piece of Americana sharing ranks with apple pie, maple syrup, and that staple of staples, good ole corn. We have become very familiar with the pale, mild-flavored hybrid tomatoes in the supermarkets, the thick canned pastes, and those cute little cherries at your local salad bar. But, for those of us who really love tomatoes, and are looking for something a little more unique or very specific, we grow our own. I am going to attempt to briefly cover the basics of tomato varieties that gardeners should be familiar with. Determinate vs. Indeterminate Many gardeners have heard these terms applied to a few different fruits. These words refer to the specific plant’s fruit production habit. Determinate tomato varieties produce one large crop and then produce little or no fruit for the rest of the season. They are usually shorter than indeterminate varieties and have a fixed height. So, there is no need to stake them. These are often paste or plum tomato varieties. Indeterminate or the vining varieties are going to be the most common variety for home gardening. They produce a continuous crop all summer until frost, and then they will start to die back. Tomato Varieties Your standard or slicing tomatoes are the common medium-sized round tomatoes. These will most often be used in soups or sliced for salads. You’ve seen these in six-pack trays at your local supermarket. Beef Steak are big tomatoes, some up to 2 pounds. These are the ones that, when sliced, fit sandwiches and burgers very nicely. Beef Steak varieties are also great for stuffing and baking. However, they are a home garden dream, a big tasty return on the simple investment in a tiny packet of seeds. Some popular cultivars of this variety are ‘Better Boy’, ‘Big Beef’, and ‘Park’s Whopper’. Cherry tomatoes are very small tomatoes, ranging from barely bigger than your finger tip to the size of a golf ball. They are often very sweet and perfect by themselves just as a snack. They are the sublime salad tomato because they add lots of flavor, and you don’t have to slice them. The elongated smaller and sweeter grape tomatoes are also a tasty variation of the cherry tomato. Cherry tomato plants produce a large amount of fruit, so you don’t have to plant many to get plenty of tomatoes. Paste or plum tomatoes are, as the name suggests, often used for canning and sauces. They work well for this because they are less juicy than other varieties, they don’t have a core, and they have far less seeds than other varieties. They are usually small and slightly elongated or pear-shaped. They are often lumped together as Roma tomatoes, which is actually just one cultivar of this tomato variety.
